Bookkeeper - Construction (Remote)

Apply for this Position →
About the Position: We’re looking for a Bookkeeper to join our energetic, fast-paced team. In this role, you’ll oversee daily accounting operations, ensuring accuracy and on-time delivery for our clients. You’ll support our clients and our team of Bookkeepers and Controllers in producing weekly deliverables — cash position reports, A/P, A/R, payroll oversight, certified payroll, accountability reporting, and treasury services. Daily, you’ll live in a few key inboxes, providing responsive, high-quality communication. When we meet with our clients, it’s on Zoom with cameras on. Communication — paired with applied bookkeeping knowledge — is the heart of this role. Our ideal candidate has worked in the office of a contractor, trade, or home services business with end-to-end accounting responsibility (for example, an office manager who loves the work but wants the flexibility of remote work). You enjoy interacting with staff and clients, are strong with capacity planning and resource allocation, and thrive under deadlines while bringing warmth to every interaction. You’re tech-savvy, curious, and excited to try new software. This role reports directly to a Controller. About ProfitWorks: We do things differently at ProfitWorks. We prioritize customer service and treat our clients like family. We value work-life balance and care for our employees. We strive for excellence and emphasize continuous improvement. (And we don’t do taxes.) ProfitWorks provides Fractional CFO/Controller services to the trades and construction industries. We’re fully remote, with a concierge, advisory-focused business model. By design, we don’t offer tax services, and we don’t work evenings or weekends — we don’t believe a sustainable business requires 50+ hour weeks. That means you’ll have time to meet the school bus at the end of the street or start the crockpot for a hot family dinner. We believe a highly relational approach is what protects our value as AI and automation reshape this industry. We serve hardworking clients with excellence, acting as their fractional/ integrated financial partner — making sure their money has a plan and their local team has support and accountability. We’re the opposite of high-volume compliance work. Our international team handles most of the bookkeeping, A/P, A/R prep, job costing, and month-end close and report prep — so this role can focus on client relations, final close, weekly AP Loom reports, and AR oversight. Why ProfitWorks: • Longevity and investment in people: several team members have been with us for more than a decade. Our CEO invests in her team, is generous, and wants people to stick around and succeed. • This role focuses on financial oversight and client relations — supporting team members and ensuring deadlines are met. We’re looking for someone who has lived this work and knows what it takes to keep a construction business running smoothly. • Most data entry, reconciliations, and report prep are handled by our Accounting team members. • Our team includes 7 US-based employees and 15+ overseas team members handling the bulk of Jr & Sr. Bookkeeping tasks. You’ll work in a quick, close-knit, remote environment with ample support available when needed. • We are in high demand, real growth: very few firms offer Controllership services, which means meaningful growth opportunities as we work toward becoming an industry leader. • Training and a passion for growth are encouraged and celebrated. There is room for advancement. • We document everything: every process has SOPs and Loom videos to follow. • We’re tech-savvy and always exploring great third-party tools for our clients. • Serving a niche industry means you can build true mastery of our service offering. Compensation: $23.00 - 26.00 per/year Hours: 40 Hours per week Benefits: 2-weeks paid vacation. Location: Remote **** YOU MUST RESIDE ONE OF THE FOLLOWING STATES: Washington, Oregon, Idaho or Montana. **** This is a W-2 position, your identification will need to match one of these states to be hired. A note on flexibility: while we deeply value work-life balance, this role has daily deliverables and regular scheduled meetings with our team and clients. This isn’t a work-whenever-you-want role — it’s a structured, deadline-driven role with a warm, personal touch. Job Duties: • Everything we do reflects our values: Excellence, Warmth, Integrity, Collaboration, and Innovation. • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes • Process payroll accurately and on time (if needed) • Oversee the accuracy and timeliness of weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting • Submit weekly AP allocations via Loom and provide AR oversight • Prepare budgets, forecasts, and financial plans for Controller presentations • Review and analyze financial data to identify trends, variances, and areas for improvement • Collaborate with internal and external auditors during financial audits, providing documentation and addressing findings • Communicate with and prepare documentation for CPAs • Track task progress and provide updates in ClickUp • Serve multiple client engagements, communicating about financial status and addressing issues as they arise • Collaborate cross-functionally with HR, Finance, and IT to streamline processes and implement best practices • Support and train client team members when needed • Foster a culture of operational excellence — identifying opportunities for process improvement, cost optimization, and workflow efficiency • Ensure compliance with industry regulations, company policies, and quality standards About You: • 3+ years of relevant experience in a similar bookkeeping role • QBO ProAdvisor Certification • Knowledge of, and passion for, the construction and/or trade industry • Solid understanding of construction accounting: cost allocations, AIA billing, payroll, prevailing wage, revenue recognition, WIP, budgets, P&L, balance sheet, cash flow, and project-based financial management • An analytical mindset — able to analyze complex operational data, spot trends, and make data-driven decisions • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills • Experience with project management tools/methodologies, capacity planning, and professional development • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, dynamic environment • A positive attitude and excitement to be part of a close team • Detail-oriented, organized, self-directed, and motivated • Comfortable on camera for frequent Zoom meetings • Treats deadlines as sacred • A person who genuinely loves helping team members and clients • An innovative problem-solver • Associate or bachelor’s degree in accounting (or equivalent experience) • Advanced QuickBooks Online (QBO) knowledge • Payroll platform experience: ADP, QBD Assisted, and/or Gusto (preferred) • Strong Excel skills — formulas and pivot tables required; macro experience is a big plus • Comfort with data visualization, or enthusiasm for supporting those who build it This position offers a competitive salary, opportunities for professional growth, and a dynamic work environment. If you meet the qualifications outlined above and are ready to contribute your expertise to our team, we encourage you to apply.
