About the Role
We are seeking a talented and motivated Data Engineer to join our dynamic technology team on a part-time, remote basis. In this role, you will be responsible for designing, building, and maintaining core components and features of our transaction processing systems on distributed platforms deployed in hybrid cloud environments. You'll work alongside skilled engineers in an open, supportive, and inclusive environment where your voice is valued, and you have the autonomy to make decisions about what technologies to use to solve challenging problems.
This is a senior-level individual contributor position reporting to the Head of Engineering. You'll be expected to lead by example, mentor other engineers, and drive innovation within our data engineering community. Key Responsibilities
As a Data Engineer at arenaflex, you will play a critical role in building and scaling our data infrastructure. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Design and Build Distributed Data Processing Systems: Architect and implement scalable data processing and analytics systems capable of handling massive volumes of transaction data in real-time. You'll work with distributed computing frameworks to ensure our systems can scale seamlessly as our business grows.
- Create High-Level and Detailed Designs: Develop comprehensive technical designs for subsystems and features, with a strong emphasis on performant, efficient code. You'll be responsible for translating business requirements into technical specifications that guide the development team.
- Code and Implement Features: Build and code features working closely with developers in daily activities. You'll participate in all aspects of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC), including code reviews, testing, and deployment.
- Proof of Concept Development: Build POCs (Proof of Concepts) to validate new ideas and emerging technologies. You'll explore innovative approaches and assess their viability for production deployment.
- Stay Current with Industry Trends: Continuously adopt and learn industry-leading and innovative technologies and solutions. Be at the forefront of emerging technologies and open-source products that can help build low-latency distributed systems.
- Cultivate a Culture of Innovation: Lead a culture of innovation and experimentation. Participate in a fun and results-oriented culture, always be ready to try new ideas without fear of failure. Encourage creative thinking and experimentation across the team.
- Collaborate Across Teams: Work collaboratively with peer technology and innovation teams across different locations. Partner with cross-functional teams to deliver integrated solutions that meet business objectives.
Essential Qualifications
To succeed in this role, you'll need to bring a combination of technical expertise, problem-solving skills, and a passion for learning. The ideal candidate will have:
- Educational Background: A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field. Equivalent work experience will also be considered.
- Experience in Data Processing: Hands-on experience with data processing frameworks, particularly distributed stream processing technologies. Experience with technologies like Apache Flink, Apache Spark, or similar frameworks is highly valued.
- NoSQL Database Expertise: Knowledge of designing, implementing, and operating NoSQL databases such as Cassandra, Elasticsearch, or similar distributed data stores. Understanding of data modeling, indexing strategies, and performance optimization is essential.
- Strong Technical Foundation: Solid understanding of distributed systems principles, including scalability, reliability, fault tolerance, and data consistency patterns.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to create and deliver effective presentations to senior leadership and influence stakeholders across the organization.
Preferred Qualifications

- Advanced Distributed Data Processing: Experience with distributed data processing and analytics using Cassandra, Elasticsearch, and stream processing frameworks like Apache Flink.
- Messaging Systems: Experience with distributed messaging systems such as Apache Kafka or similar event streaming platforms.
- Microservices Architecture: Experience building Microservices and working with Service Mesh technologies. Understanding of API design, service orchestration, and distributed transaction management.
- Cloud Native Technologies: Experience with cloud platforms and containerization technologies such as Docker, Kubernetes, or OpenShift. Familiarity with cloud-native architectures and deployment patterns.
- DevOps Practices: Experience with Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery (CI/CD), and DevOps practices. Understanding of infrastructure as code, automated testing, and deployment pipelines.
- Large-Scale System Design: Experience architecting large-scale distributed data systems with considerations for scalability, reliability, security, performance, and availability.
- Programming Expertise: Clear understanding of various design patterns, threading models, and memory models supported by the programming language or virtual machine you use. Proficiency in languages like Java, Scala, or Python is a plus.
- Mentorship Abilities: Ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to other engineers. Experience leading technical discussions, conducting code reviews, and helping team members grow their skills.
