Job description: Position Title: Peer Training and Placement Program Trainer (REMOTE, but must reside in San Diego or Imperial County)

Company Description: NAMI San Diego & Imperial Counties (National alliance on Mental Illness) is a nonprofit organization that provides free education, support services, and advocacy to improve the quality of everyone affected by mental illness.

Program Information: The Peer Training and Placement Program supports peers and family members that are seeking to become state certified peer support specialists by teaching the Medi-Cal Peer Support Certification (PSSC) Training. The Trainer works with the Support Trainer under Program Manager Supervision.

Primary Responsibilities/Function: The Peer Training and Placement Program Trainer is responsible for presenting online learning by facilitating 80-hour Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification (PSSC) Training, 13-class curricula, live, online. Engage in community outreach to San Diego and Imperial Counties for participant recruitment public behavioral health system, providers, organizations, community centers, schools, and businesses. Follow the Peer Training and Placement Program experience trajectory from outreach and registration to class facilitation to alum follow-up for six months after the class, providing remote career counseling support where appropriate.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• In addition to training, a primary focus is community outreach (virtual and in-person) to connect and recruit both family and peer qualified participants in San Diego and Imperial Counties.
• Co-present classes live -online using excellent non-verbal, verbal, and written communication skills, practicing and modeling Recovery Language.
• Support class participants through virtual meetings, telephone conversations, text, and email communication.
• Review homework assignments, and track completion.
• Work with class participants to provide placement development and support.
• Document all communication and provide resources as needed.
• Document and input program data as assigned.
• Understand and practice the 17 Core Competencies for Peer Workers in Behavioral Health Services.
• Represent the NAMI perspective of mental health and recovery in public, social, and educational settings, maintaining an open and positive viewpoint towards mental health.
• Assist in conducting virtual outreach to specific communities.
• Other duties as assigned.

Accountability: Reports to the Peer Training and Placement Program Manager and provides support to Trainers.

Minimum Requirements, including linguistic and cultural skills, education, experiences, licenses, and certifications:

• Self-identified as Peer/Family Member (lived experience with mental health).
• Certificate of training completion as Peer Support Specialist OR three years' experience clearly demonstrated equivalent work or volunteer experience supervised in Peer Support Specialist with the public behavioral health sector.
• Strong experience training or teaching adult learners online and/or in-person.
• Confident public speaking skills with experience of teaching or groups facilitation on Zoom or other online platforms.
• Ability to plan, analyze, problem solve, manage time and multi-task while teaching a live class.
• Excellent communication skills (verbal, non-verbal & written) and detail oriented with excellent organizational skills.
• Advanced knowledge and skills in the use of computer software (Microsoft Office Access. Database, PowerPoint, Word, Excel, and online platforms such as Zoom, email, social media, and web navigation.
• Ability to work virtually as part of a team with diverse populations.
• Ability to work independently, remotely, with demonstrated ability to collaborate.
• Demonstrate knowledge in cultural and linguistic competency, co-occurring, and gender responsiveness, and trauma informed care practice.
• Advanced knowledge and skills in the Core Competencies of Peer Workers. Grounded in personal recovery.
• Reliable and consistent attendance.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.

Other Qualifications:

• A strong positive viewpoint towards mental health & recovery language is essential.
• Reliable access to internet.
• Have a private space (room) to work remotely. Confidentiality and discretion are a must.
• Flexibility and availability to work some evenings/weekends.
• Willingness to support NAMI San Diego & Imperial Counties' mission & values.
• Completion of Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification Training and/or other Support Specialist Training, such as Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP), and Peer Employment Training (PET), NAMI Family-to Family Course desired.
• Bilingual & bicultural English/Spanish or other threshold language desired.

Working Conditions and Job Setting: This is a primarily remote (out-of-office/work-from-home) position, with in-person outreach presentations and community events. Must be able to work with and communicate with diverse populations, teaching and providing training and digital support.
Expected salary: $22 per hour
